Dr. Michael Funderburk, Urologist, Joins North Alabama Medical Center

FLORENCE, Ala., – North Alabama Medical Center is pleased to welcome Michael Funderburk, MD, to the medical staff as our newest urologist. Dr. Funderburk comes to NAMC from Advanced Urology in Decatur, Georgia.
With more than 25 years practicing General Urology, Dr. Funderburk focuses on Urologic Cancer, Stone Disease and BPH. He served as clinical associate professor in Surgery for Mercer Medical School, teaching medical students and residents. He has also served in leadership of all hospital staff positions and in the American College of Surgeons.
“Dr. Funderburk is joining Dr. Mokulis and Dr. Hyatt to provide advanced outpatient and inpatient urological surgery,” said NAMC CEO Russell Pigg. “We are excited to have him serving our Shoals community.”
Dr. Funderburk earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Six Year Program with distinction. He was elected to the honor societies Omicron Delta Kappa as an undergraduate and Alpha Omega Alpha in medical school. During that time, he served in leadership roles in the AMA and Medical School Leadership and Governance.
Prior to his time at Advanced Urology in Decatur, Ga., Funderburk did his general surgery and Urologic Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital during which he did research in Urologic Cancer and served as Instructor in Surgery for Harvard Medical School. He later practiced in Savannah, Georgia for more than 20 years.
“I am excited to be in Florence,” said Funderburk. “The community has offered a warm embrace and patients and staff are a delight to work with.”
Dr. Funderburk enjoys volunteer work having served with the United Way Campaign, Scouting, Olympic Sailing in both medical and race management and several medical mission trips to Guatemala with Faith in Practice.
His passion in practice is caring for patients as individuals. He revels in knowing not just your health issues but your life experience, family and personal goals. In his spare time, he enjoys his grandkids, as well as sailing and diving.
