North Alabama Medical Center now offers a Meds to Beds program to Same Day Surgery patients and a select group of medical-surgical patients, with the program already in the works to expand.
Meds to Beds allows patients to receive their post operation and discharge prescriptions before leaving the hospital, which eliminates a trip to the pharmacy on the way home and potentially an added wait.
“When we remove barriers for obtaining a prescription, compliance of taking the medication increases,” said Rhee Perry, Director of Surgical Services. “Meds to Beds is a fantastic program that is about providing excellent customer service and increasing the quality of care to our patients.”
North Alabama Medical Center has partnered with a local pharmacy, Medical Center Pharmacy, to fill the prescriptions, which comes at no additional cost to the patient. Upon bedside delivery, the patient’s nurse will review the medication and potential side effects and a pharmacist is also available to answer any questions.
“When my surgery is finished, I’m ready to go home and get some rest,” said Charles Isom, a Same Day Surgery patient, who took advantage of the Meds to Beds program. “I appreciate the convenience so I can focus on recovery.”
For Same Day Surgery patients, admission clerks will ask a patient if they’d like to participate in the program during their preadmission testing appointment. Insurance is accepted, however the Meds to Beds program is optional, so a patient can still use their typical pharmacy, if they prefer.
